Both igloos and
hot tents (tents with stoves) offer a more comfortable and safe
environment than a standard tent. Hot tents offer the ability to have
a warm respite from the cold and a place to dry clothes, but once the
fire is out you are back to a tent with only a 10 degree boost to your
outside temps.
An igloo on the other hand (or other snow dwelling) will keep your
inside temps at about 34 degrees F no matter what the outside air
temp. This allows for lighter sleeping gear and is warm enough to keep
your shoes and water bottles unfrozen. With enough snow you can craft a
very comfortable home with trenches and shelves that allow for a much
more comfortable overnight stay. On windy nights they are extremely
quiet compared to the flapping of nylon or canvas.
Both options have benefits and drawbacks. The hot tent requires a
heavier load and access to dry wood. The igloo or snow cave requires
deep snow and time to build. I have tried both and like them both in
different scenarios. The bottom line is that both are much better than
the standard tent option.
